Polaroids

For my birthday this year, I got a Polaroid Onestep Land Camera. I got a pack of paper with it. Paper for this thing is pretty expensive. Like almost $4 a picture. So when all 8 pictures of my first pack turned out like this:

I was pretty sad. I bought another pack of paper (8 pictures) and the first three still turned out like the last one. I have a nice stack of these now. (actually, they're taped to my wall because I think this is funny...slightly). BUT. My fourth picture (an awkward selfie which I gave away. ha.) turned out almost good! I think the quality of these pictures is expected to be pretty low, but the effect is cool- so, in other words: the picture was cool. The next two were semi-decent as well:
You can't really tell- but on the left is a boat and this is the driveway to an abandoned house near Tottenham, ON. This place is pretty special. I have the key to that boat! The house is pretty far off, but the important bits are the memories- not so much the picture.

This was the second picture that I took and it's of Andrew. I tried to get him to pose, but I think this picture's a good reminder of how he usually is! haha. And I think it turned out pretty decent.

I might see about getting that selfie back, just to scan it and show my first polaroid that worked. But for now: these are my first polaroid shots and I think they're pretty great.

OSSTF: Student Achievement Award

Today I found out that I won the provincial scholarship/contest of the OSSTF: Student Achievement Award for this piece of art called MOVE. The piece is mixed media: a combination of acrylic and collage materials. The prize? $1000. All going towards school. I'm thrilled and honoured to have been chosen for this award. So thanks all, for your support!

This was the write-up, it's a bit lengthy. But GOOD! The story behind this piece is what I believe needs to be shared, not the art:

My piece is called MOVE, and is mixed media (newspaper, magazine clippings, and acrylic paint) on an 18X24 canvas. The name of my subject is Kitty Genovese.
In 1964, Kitty Genovese, a 28 year old New Yorker, was stabbed in her neighbourhood. What makes her story so tragic, is the fact that an estimated 38 people saw, or heard her being raped and stabbed to death. Nobody moved.
After her death, research was done to figure out why nobody reported anything when so many people witnessed the attack. The results were shocking. The more people that are present, the less likely it is for someone to stand up. This is called “diffusion of responsibility”. People diffuse the responsibility of standing up and assume someone else will move, but if everyone assumes this, nobody moves. This theory is now called the “Kitty Genovese Syndrome”, or “Bystander Effect”. So, in her honour and for all victims of the bystander effect, I dedicate this art piece to inspire viewers to move.

A note on Applying for University.

Hi. So it's that time. University applications! For me and Andrew, we've had a bit of a rough go. We're applying to Emily Carr University (Vancouver) and the Ontario College of Art and Design University (Toronto...College? University? Who knows!). I guess we should have done more research and kept on top of things because we missed a few deadlines. Looks like we can only apply to OCAD now- out of province applications are WEIRD. I asked a few of my classmates what their experience with applying was. Here's what they said:

Andrew:
uuuuuuuuuuuh
it was
hard because I kept losing various pins and numbers and things
and
was annoying that provinces didn't cooperate

Emily:
Urm...stressful. You have to make so many decisions in so short a time. You have to blindly put your faith in a school when applying to it and hope to God it is not lying when it says it is the best...because they all say that I found that a lot of schools were similar so I just picked places I wanted to live. Once it was done I felt even MORE stress knowing some of Ontarios top Universities were watching my ever academic move...but I got early acceptance to Laurentian so...I have at least one place to go

Hayley (ME):
Well. I have a really hard time keeping organized and keeping track of all the passwords, codes, numbers and things and I missed some deadlines for sending my transcripts. It's a stressful time, and I'll be glad when it's done!

HEY!

Hi! I'm Hayley. and sometimes it might be my pal Andrew postin' on here.
This lil nook of the big wide internet will just be a little piece of me. My life, style, ideas, thoughts, ramblings, art, going-ons- just whatever I feel is worthy enough to share. I had a bit of a blog before, but it didn't really go anywhere and I wasn't happy with it. But I'm back! I don't know how often I'll post because all of my cameras are out of service right now, and without pictures...this would be super boring. So welcome, if you actually read to the bottom of this paragraph. Thanks for stoppin' in. Hopefully this will be a happenin' place in a short time!
